Food trucks: here’s how we reach out to those most in need
The journey of food trucks
Reaching out to those most in need as the first step in building a relationship of support. This is the guiding principle behind our Food trucks, equipped with ovens, refrigerators, and boilers.
We launched this service in Milan during the pandemic to assist homeless people who, with the mandatory closure of many soup kitchens, found it increasingly difficult to find food.
Today, the Food trucks are spread across the country, and with over 330,000 meals distributed annually, they have become a structural part of our street presence.
Nutritional and Inclusive Food Options The food offerings are varied to ensure a proper nutritional intake while respecting the cultural and religious needs of the people we serve.
Every week more than 6.300 meals across breakfasts, lunches and dinners
are served on the streets of seven cities: Milan, Varese, Turin, Padua, Rome, Naples and Bari.
Relationship care is at the heart of the service
In addition to alleviating the material hardship of those living in extreme poverty, the Food Trucks, like our Street Units acts as a social antenna, monitoring the most vulnerable cases and making the first contact with the people we meet.
Attention, proximiy, and listening are the key ingredients of this service, which prioritizes the dignity of the individual.
The meal we offer is never just a simple meal. It’s about offering attention, bringing warmth to those who might not have it, and opening up the possibility of a relationship of listening and trust. Reaching out to meet their needs means closing the gap between those in difficulty and those who can help.
When I come to you for dinner, I don’t feel like a homeless person. I feel like someone meeting friends.
